Do you have any delicious ideas for Thanksgiving dinner that do not involve turkey or ham?

On Thanksgiving afternoon. my oldest daughter will be celebrating with her fiance and his family. My youngest and I will be going to my boyfriend’s family dinner. Afterward, I would like to have a small, simple but delicious dinner for both of my children, my soon to be son-in-law, and my boyfriend. I do not want to prepare anything that is time consuming. No one really cares for turkey, either. I thought about some kind of soup or chowder. If you all have any ideas I would greatly appreciate it. Or any recipes or website addresses.

My favourite home made soup.
Get some cooked chicken breasts from your deli.
Fry or saute one finely chopped onion in a tablespoon of butter until it is translucent. Take out the onions and mix 2 tablespoons of flour with the remaining butter. You will get a thick lumpy paste…not to worry. Over a gentle heat slowly add milk to the flour- butter mix, stirring all the time. Add a little salt & pepper, some fresh parsley. Then when the mix has thickened you can add some cooked potatoes and the chopped chicken. Use a blender to puree the soup and serve….Mm mmmm…sometimes I leave out the parsley and after blending add a can of sweetcorn.
Serve with hot crusty bread and fresh dairy butter.

Happy Thanksgiving…

A duck breast, basted, cooked like a turkey, would be nice. Sweet potatoes are a good side for duck.

After all that traveling and eating, a simple soup or chowder for dinner is an excellent idea. And it doesn’t sound like you are going to have a whole lot of time in the kitchen that day — maybe something that can be prepared in advance then reheated?

    Onion Wine Soup
    1/4 c. butter, melted
    5 large onions, chopped
    5 c. beef broth
    1/2 c. celery leaves
1 large potato, peeled and sliced
    1 c. dry white wine
    1 T. vinegar
    2 t. sugar
    1 c. light cream
    1 T. minced parsley
    salt and pepper
In large dutch oven, combine onion with melted butter, mix well. Add next 3 ingredients, bring to boiling. Cover, reduce to simmer, cook 30 minutes. Puree mixture in blender, return to pot. Blend in wine, vinegar and sugar. Bring to boil, reduce to simmer and cook 45 minutes. At this point, you could allow to cool and refrigerate until ready to serve. When redy to serve, heat to almost boiling, add cream, parsley and seasonings. Heat thoroughly but do not boil.

Serve with crusty bread, white wine, and for dessert assorted cheeses, fresh fruit and nuts. Aw heck, go ahead and splurge with a simple meal like this and have cheescake for dessert.

Baked chicken doesn’t take too long, neither does fried deer steak.

I have made great pumpkin stew and it would be great for Thanksgiving too. You basically make stew and cook it in a pumpkin. It also makes a great center piece b/c you serve it right out of the pumpkin and it is wonderful!!! If you like I can sent the recipe. Have a great Thanksgiving! tj 🙂

Since you’re all already eating a dinner prior to your later dinner, I would suggest something light, since you all will most likely not be all that hungry. You could have a pre-made deli sandwich that you can order so that you don’t have to worry about cooking (you’ll probably be tired) along with a salad or soup. You could even just have a tray of nice cold cuts with vegetables and dip and a light dessert and whatever beverage you’ll be having. Thanksgiving isn’t really about trying to impress anybody, it’s a time for togetherness and like I said, you all will have eaten a traditional dinner, so relax, have finger foods and kick back and have a good time with your loved ones. It’ll be a lot less stressful for you to think about while you’re with your boyfriend’s family.
