Is it still a social norm to decorate for Christmas AFTER Thanksgiving?

My husband and I just moved into a house from an apartment and this is our first time hosting the family for Christmas (Yea!).

I have been seeing Christmas decorations since before Halloween, but I always thought you were supposed to wait until AFTER Thanksgiving to decorate.

Is that no longer the social norm? Should I wait?

My family has always done it the weekend of Thanksgiving – I had no idea some people would do it before!

I suppose it depends on where you live. If you’re in a place where it’s bitterly cold and/or snowy by Thanksgiving, then I can hardly blame people for trying to get Christmas decorations up as early as possible. Otherwise, though, no, I don’t get that…

If you’re used to waiting, and aren’t particularly in a hurry to get your decorations up, then sure, wait. There’s no real "social norm" about when you have to decorate for Christmas – although I will say that your neighbors would probably be annoyed if you did it in, say, September! But now isn’t too early, if you really want to get them up. It’s totally up to you and what you feel like doing.

Do what you want! I think many people are going one extreme or the other. They are either decorating while the pumpkins are still on the porch or they are fed up with Christmas being 6 months of the year and do little or nothing at all. We kinda compromise. We get things out and set up in November but we don’t light it all or do the tree until after Thanksgiving. It might be a good idea for you to get a jumpstart too. Hosting holidays is major work, you’ll need all the time savers you can get!

they put that stuff out so people can buy them. You can decorate whenever you want to; most people take one holiday at a time and that is why most wait until after thanksgiving. The day after thanksgiving kicks off the holiday season. Whatever you want to do ..do it. I started digging my stuff out and replacing what needs to be replaced.
