Thanksgiving Dinner ideas? (vegetarian, and meat eater)?
She’s a vegetarian and im a meat eater, so basically no turkey –
what are some simple to make food ideas for the two of us?
what we have so far:
turkey sandwhich for me
mac and cheese / pasta / meatless lasagna for her
we need more ideas,
Try all the trimmings with a Quorn roast!!!! That is what we are having for Christmas. I am a Veggie and my husband isn’t and we occasionally have a Quorn roast and roast potatoes, stuffing balls, yorkshire puddings, gravy and veg… Its delicious!!!!! Its as close to a turkey as you can get and it not be real!!!!! If you can, try one before Thanksgiving to see if you both like it, they aren’t too pricey and they will feed 4 to 6 people or make 2 or 3 meals if its just the 2 of you. *Smile*
Whatever you have, enjoy yourself and have a really happy Thanksgiving!!!!!!
Why type of stuffing/dressing are you planning to cook this Thanksgiving?
Recipe please. Thanks!!!! : )
Chicken and Cornbread Dressing
(GREAT FOR HOLIDAYS)
1 large hen or chicken
3 cups crumbled bread (day old)
6 cups crumbled cornbread (not sweet)
2 large onions, chopped
1/2 cup green onion tops, chopped
1/2 cup chopped bell pepper
1 cup celery, chopped
7 eggs (raw)
2 cups milk (I use evap. milk)
5 cans cream of chicken soup
salt and pepper (I don’t salt, I use chicken bullion cubes adds more flavor to broth.)
Preheat oven 375 degrees. Cook chicken until tender in seasoned water, then de-bone. In saucepan, combine 1 !/2 cups of the broth made from boiling chicken, onions, celery and green bell pepper and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until vegetables are tender. In large mixing bowl mix chicken, breads, broth/vegetable mixture: add eggs, milk and salt and pepper. Mix well and bake in a large, greased baking dish. Bake 375 degrees for 45 minutes or until knife comes out of center clean. Serves 10 – 12

What are some creative, simple, and inexpensive decorating ideas?
I am hosting a pre-Thanksgiving party for about 50-100 people. They are all Graduate students, Faculty and their families. I am looking for some great decorating ideas, that are creative, simple and inexpensive. What are some ideas? Table decorations are needed as well as general decorations. Thanks in advance.
Go pick some fall plants – some sumac, dry grass, branches with red leaves on them, whatever strikes your fancy.
Plunk them into hollowed little pumpkins or gourds for centrepieces. You can dress them up by tying a ribbon around the plants to hold them together. You can do the same with mini-pumpkins for votive or other candles – cut a hole and plunk the candle inside the pumpkin. I personally think, though, that buying a couple of nice tapers and setting them on cheap candle stands looks classier.
You should try your local dollar store. Mine sells glass vases, decent looking plastic and fabric foliage, and jacquard-style table runners. They also sell tapers for 2-4 for a dollar, and candleholders starting at 40 cents each.
I´m fixing Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday here in Germany-what did you make, and do you have recipes?
Since I´m in school, there wasn´t time to make a big meal Thursday, so I´m doing it this weekend as a surprise for my German husband.
I made turkey with cranberry pecan stuffing, sweet potato cassarole, green bean cassarole and gravy, and caramel apple cheesecake. The cheesecake recipe is on foodnetwork.com from emeril .
for the turkey, I deboned it the day before and roasted the carcass, boiling it off afterward to make stock for the gravy. this is the best way to cook a turkey, you’re guaranteed moist breastmeat this way. you sear the pieces skin side down until skin is browned to your liking, turn them and sear for 2-3 more minutes. I placed the breast meat ,skin side up , on a mound of the stuffing for the ” in the bird” stuffing flavor, and placed the rest of the pieces around it in the turkey roaster. This takes about 1-1/2 hours to roast at 375, or until breast meat is 160 degrees.
stuffing
1 loaf white bread cubed
1/2 cup celery chopped finely
1/2 cup onion chopped finely
4 tblsp butter or margarine
1 cup dried cranberries
1 cup white wine
1-2 cups chicken stock
1 cup chopped apples
bells seasoning ( or poultry seasoning) to taste
onion powder
garlic powder
salt
pepper
In a large stock pot:
saute onion and celery in the butter with a pinch of salt about 3-4 minutes on medium heat. add apples until just tender, about 2 minutes. add cranberries for another 2 minutes then
deglaze the pan with the wine and simmer for another 2 minutes. add about 1-2 tsp bells, onion powder, pepper and garlic powder to your taste. season lightly, you can always add more later.
remove from the heat and add bread then chicken stock, about 1/2 cup at a time until stuffing is desired consistancy. Beat the egg and fold into your stuffing. Dont stir it too much once you’ve added the bread, you dont want it mushy
bake either in or under your bird, or in a pan at 375 for about half an hour, until stuffing is slightly crisp on the outside.
if you bake your stuffing in the bird, you cook the bird at 375 until temp is 165.very important, if your bird is done, your stuffing has to be 165 as well, and it may not be at this point. you may have to remove the stuffing and continue cooking until 165.
sweet potato cassarole
5-6 sweet potatoes
4 large apples sliced thin
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 stick margarine or butter, melted
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp ginger
3/4 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped
peel and slice sweet potatoes about 1/2 inch thick
boil potatoes until just tender crisp, about 10 minutes
place a layer of the sweet potatoes in the bottom of a buttered cassarole dish. place apples in a layer over the potatoes.
mix together brown sugar and spices. layer half of this mixture over the apples, the layer the rest of the sweet potatoes. layer the other half of the brown sugar mixture over the top. top with nuts then drizzle the melted butter, cover with foil and bake at 375 for about half an hour or until potatoes are nice and tender.
if the potatoes look dry on top, you can remove from the oven and baste the top with the juices from the bottom of the pan using the spoon. bake the last 5 minutes uncovered to crisp if desired.
green bean cassarole is the frenches recipe on the durkee french fried onion container. not sure if germans would appreciate, lol.
help trying to get some ideas for Thanksgiving dinner?
we are tired of eating the usuals mashed potatoes, green bean casserole etc…!!!
If you don’t want to go “traditional” how about making another theme, like all Italian food, make a nice lasagna…you could even make a turkey lasagna! 🙂 This would work with any ethnicity…Mexican, German, etc…
Or you could really get creative and come up with a theme such as Football, and have all the food relate back to the game…like Prime-Time Rib, and Sacked Quarterback Tenderloins!
Maybe you could have Macy’s Thankgiving Day Parade Dinner with STRING beans and Garfield Cat Fish!
Start thinking along these lines and I am sure you will come up with some brilliant ideas that are less traditional while still being Thanksgiving oriented!!
Good Luck!!
What should I plan for a Thanksgiving program for young children?
I need to plan a Thanksgiving pageant/program at the school I work at. What should i have the kids do in such a program? I need costume ideas, song ideas, anything!
Re-enact a little feast between the pilgrimamd and Indians. The kids could make their own little headpieaces out of construction paper and stuff. Seems like it could be cute.
